First A400M delivered for ground test
By Stephen Trimble

Airbus is launching ground tests on the first A400M in advance of a first flight that has been scheduled before the end of the year. The long-delayed programme delivered the first A400M to Airbus's in-house flight-test unit on 12 November. The A400M is considered an acquisition candidate for several Middle East militaries, including the Royal Saudi Air Force.

На 23 ноември е било първото рулиране на А400М. В печата вече се появиха и залози, кой ще излети първи В787 или А400М. За момента мисля, че победител ще е европейският самолет.

A400M performs first taxi trial
By Craig Hoyle

Airbus Military's A400M transport has undergone its first low-speed taxi trial, with the milestone having taken place near Seville, Spain on 23 November. "The Airbus Military A400M airlifter has moved under its own power for the first time", the company says.
In a series of tests spanning 90min, aircraft MSN001 was moved at speeds of up to 20kt (37km/h), with its pilots having "tested the normal, alternate and emergency braking systems, the anti-skid system, the nose wheel steering and reverse power," Airbus says. The transport also made 180° turns and was taxied in reverse, it adds.
"We were impressed with the ease with which we could taxi the aircraft in terms of the precision and ease of use of the nose wheel steering, and the effectiveness of the braking systems," says chief test pilot military Ed Strongman.
Airbus - which only ran MSN001's four Europrop International TP400-D6 turboprop engines together for the first time on 18 November - says further taxi tests will be conducted "at increasingly high speeds" over the next few days. It expects the A400M to make its delayed flight debut before year-end.

Първият полет на A400M е насрочен за 50-та седмица от годината или от 6 до 12 декември?

Airbus targets ‘week 50’ for first flight of A400M
By Craig Hoyle
27/11/2009
Airbus Military believes that its first A400M transport could make its delayed flight debut in early- to mid-December, with its confidence having been boosted by recent good progress with ground tests involving aircraft MSN001.
In a letter emailed on 27 November to possible attendees of the first flight event, Airbus Military managing director Domingo Ureña says: "We are pleased to inform you that ground tests of the first A400M are progressing satisfactorily. This allows us to anticipate a first flight in week 50."
The goal would see the European airlifter's debut sortie take place from the A400M final assembly facility near Seville, Spain between 6 and 12 December, and be in line with an Airbus objective to fly the type before year-end.
Airbus notes that its week 50 target is "weather dependent", and adds: "There may be a last minute unexpected occurrence which could then push back the take-off by a couple of hours to one or several days."
MSN001's four Europrop International TP400-D6 turboprop engines were run together for the first time on 18 November, and the aircraft performed its first slow-speed taxi trials just five days later.

Soaring cost exposed as A400M sets debut flight
Wed Dec 9, 2009 9:55am EST
By Sabine Siebold and Tim Hepher

BERLIN/PARIS, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Germany lifted the lid on a 5 billion euro ($7.4 billion) cost overrun on Europe's A400M military transport plane on Wednesday, raising the stakes for a long-delayed maiden flight that Airbus scheduled for Friday.

A German defence spokesman said the European planemaker's parent company EADS (EAD.PA) had told buyers the 20 billion euro project to develop a European heavy airlifter for combat and humanitarian missions was 25 percent over budget.

"We are talking about roughly 5 billion euros," a spokesman for the German defence ministry said.

The overshoot follows engine delays and other problems that have plagued Europe's largest defence project. Facing penalties, EADS blames part of the delay on past political interference and is seeking a deal on costs with a group of seven NATO buyers.

Ministers from Germany, France, Britain, Spain, Belgium, Luxembourg and Turkey will meet in Seville on Friday on the sidelines of a long-awaited maiden flight for the Airbus A400M, which is nearly two years behind schedule, officials said.

Airbus said the A400M, powered by the West's largest ever turbo-prop engines, would take off at 0900 GMT on Friday in Seville, where over 180 of the planes are due to be assembled.

Analysts have said the one- to three-hour flight could boost the chances of rescuing a project that teetered on the brink of collapse until the partnership of European NATO nations agreed to renegotiate the development contract earlier this year.

Negotiators are looking for ways to close the gap without asking taxpayers for any new cash, at least for the time being, since leading buyers such as Britain have made plain there is no new cash available during the recession.

One way being considered to square the circle would be to deliver about 25 percent fewer planes under the same budget, equating to an increase in the unit price per plane, which now stands at around 100 million euros [ID:nGEE5AO0Y4].

The remaining planes would then be left in budget limbo until new funds can be found when economies improve.

The idea is broadly backed by Britain, France and Spain, according to sources close to the talks.

But Germany is so far reluctant to make concessions on price that would involve a reduction in guaranteed deliveries.

BACKING IN PRINCIPLE

Berlin reiterated on Wednesday that it needed all 60 planes it had ordered, a third of the total number of 180 ordered by the core group of seven purchasing nations. [ID:nBAT004991]

An alternative plan being considered for at least one country would see payments staggered in such a way that allowed EADS to keep receiving regular payments even where there was a gap in deliveries, amounting to an advance on later planes.

A source close to the talks said nations had agreed in principle to keep the project going in a way that would bail out EADS on some costs, but had not yet agreed how to execute a compromise or what proportion of the pain EADS should carry.

"We have moved beyond that stage," the source said, asked whether any nation was now threatening to scrap the A400M.

Airbus has for its part effectively threatened to stop building the plane and walk away if there is no deal -- but such a decision would force parent EADS to pay back 5.1 billion euros in advances, eating up more than half of its cash pile.

In the complex negotiations, coordinated on the buyers' side by a former Belgian general, there are many bargaining chips and each country has a shopping list of requirements.

One source close to the talks said Germany was pushing for guarantees on technical specifications including cargo handling and the availability of complex terrain-hugging software to help the bulky transport planes dodge enemy fire at low altitudes.

The A400M was designed to carry up to 37 tonnes of troops and heavy equipment to war zones such as Afghanistan or in support of humanitarian missions.

Germany, with 4,400 soldiers in Afghanistan, is the third largest force contributor after the U.S. and Britain.

The plane would give Europe its own heavyweight transport fleet and aim for a niche in export markets between the smaller Lockheed Martin C-130 (LMT.N) Hercules and the Boeing C-17 (BA.N) jet-powered transport plane, which can carry 75 tonnes.

Днес се решава съдбата на проекта A400M. EADS поиска още 5 милиарда евро за завършване на проекта...

EADS pleads for €5bn to complete A400M
By Jeremy Lemer and Gerrit Wiesmann
Published: December 10 2009 02:00
Financial Times
EADS, the European defence and aerospace group, has asked the seven partner nations behind the much-delayed A400M military transport aircraft for a further €5bn ($7.36bn) to complete the project.
Should the countries agree, it would raise the project costs by about 25 per cent but would provide a lifeline to EADS .
Officials are reviewing the request, according to German defence ministry officials. Senior negotiators will discuss the topic further tomorrow in Seville, Spain, where the A400M is scheduled to make its much anticipated first flight .
The A400M deal, signed in 2003, was a fixed-price €20bn contract, making EADS's Airbus subsidiary responsible for all overruns. EADS has already made provisions for €2.4bn of losses on the A400M and is burning through €140m of cash a month on the project.
But it is tied to the aircraft because cancelling would trigger €5.7bn of development funding repayments and damage its credibility.
Still it will be a difficult deal to sell to the customer countries that between them have ordered 180 of the mid-sized military transporters. Defence budgets are under pressure due to the financial and economic crisis. An EADS spokesman declined to comment on the request.
The partner nations have been in intense discussions with EADS since March, when Airbus breached its contract after missing a key deadline to fly the aircraft, giving them a strong negotiating position.
Currently they are working to a year-end deadline to rescue the flagship collaborative procurement programme, but negotiations in France and Germany have proved fruitless.
Options on the table include raising the price, maintaining the price but reducing the number of aircraft by about 40, cutting the specifications of the aircraft or splitting the purchase into several tranches to spread out the costs over a longer period.
Negotiations have been complicated by different national priorities. Germany has taken a particularly tough line, demanding that the original contract be retained in full. Britain is torn between a desire to save cash and a need to get the aircraft into service and France and Spain want to protect EADS as an industrial champion.
One German official said it was still hard to see what a solution could look like. "But everyone is working towards a deal," the official said. "One thing is for sure - none of the governments want this problem around over and beyond Christmas."

Време му беше да полети!

A400M, world's most advanced airlifter, completes first flight
11 December 2009

The first Airbus Military A400M military airlifter has landed back in Seville, Spain today at 14:02 local time (13:02 UTC) after completing a successful maiden flight lasting 3h 47min following its take-off at 10:15 local time.

Chief Test Pilot Military, Edward "Ed" Strongman, captained the flight supported by Experimental Test Pilot Ignacio "Nacho" Lombo. The engineering team on board included: Senior Flight Test Engineer Jean-Philippe Cottet who had responsibility for the powerplants; Senior Flight Test Engineer Eric Isorce with responsibility for the aircraft systems and performance; Senior Flight Test Engineer Didier Ronceray with responsibility for the handling qualities of the aircraft; and Test Flight Engineer Gerard Leskerpit.

The crew confirmed that the aircraft, known as MSN 1 and its four Europrop International TP400D turboprop engines performed as expected.

Ed Strongman said: "We have had a very successful first flight - the take-off performance was impressive, we explored a lot of the operational flight envelope, and it was a delight to operate in such a well-designed cockpit with its easy interface to all the normal and military systems. I'm sure our customer pilots are really going to like it - we certainly did."

Nacho Lombo added: "From the very beginning of the flight we were impressed by the ease of handling of the aircraft which was in line with what we experienced in the simulator. The aircraft, systems and engine performance were highly satisfactory. We sense the great potential of this magnificent machine. It has been an honour for all the crew to fly the A400M on its maiden flight, representing all the people involved in the programme."

Изображение

Chief Executive Officer Airbus Military, Domingo Urena-Raso, said: "I would like to congratulate Ed Strongman, Nacho Lombo and all of the flight-test team for completing the first flight of the A400M with great success. I am also deeply grateful to everyone in the design, manufacturing and early operations of this programme for their enormously hard work and dedication that have made this aircraft a reality. And I want to thank all those people in our industrial partners and suppliers, as well as our customers, who have contributed so much to the definition and creation of an outstanding product."

Airbus CEO Tom Enders said: "I hope we can soon provide certainty that we are able to continue the A400M programme. This is expected by those at Airbus, our partners and suppliers worldwide who contributed so strongly to today's success as well as by the air forces who wait for their plane."

For its first flight the aircraft took off at a weight of 127 tonnes, carrying 15 tonnes of test equipment including two tonnes of water ballast, compared with its maximum take-off weight of 141 tonnes. As planned, the six-man crew extensively explored the aircraft's flight envelope in direct law, including a wide speed-range, and tested lowering and raising of the landing gear and high-lift devices at altitude. After checking the aircraft's performance in the landing configuration the crew landed back at Seville.

Изображение

In the first half of 2010 MSN 1 will be joined by two sister aircraft, MSN 2 and MSN 3, followed by MSN 4 by the end of the year. A fifth aircraft will join the programme during 2011. This fleet will be used for some 3,700 hours of test-flying between now and first delivery to the French Air Force at the end of 2012. This will be followed by additional military development flying. The type will be certificated by both the civil and military authorities.

A total of 184 aircraft have so far been ordered by Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Spain, Turkey and the United Kingdom

Airbus set to ditch A400M transport plane: report
(AFP) – 16 hours ago

FRANKFURT — The head of European plane maker Airbus is preparing to ditch its A400M military transport project which is bogged down in talks with clients, a German press report said on Tuesday.

Thomas Enders reportedly told a group of Airbus directors last month he "no longer believed in pursuing the programme" and had begun to prepare for it to be terminated, the Financial Times Deutschland said.

Lists of engineers to be transferred from the A400M to the development of two other key aircraft, the A380 superjumbo and the A350, have already been drawn up, the newspaper added.

Airbus and its parent group, the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS), have been in discussions over cost overruns for several months with seven countries that were to buy the transport plane.

A total of 120 aircraft had been ordered for around 20 billion euros (29 billion dollars) but clients are being asked to pony up billions more to cover unexpected costs.

The newspaper said Enders estimated the chances of reaching an agreement at around 50-50.

And the German boss "is not ready to threaten the civil aviation division, which is doing well, just for the A400M," a source close to the matter was quoted as saying.

The plane made its maiden flight on December 11 in Spain, but deliveries are at least three years behind schedule.
